https://store.steampowered.com/app/3123120/Kill_the_Brickman/

Welcome to play!

Will post more info on this project later!

This game is for GMTK2024, Built to Scale

Theme: Built to Scale

This deckbuilding cozy farming sim game draws inspiration from Luck be a Landlord. Your goal is to survive the ever-increasing tax burden.

Hit "Go" and watch as the tiles go to work, scaling up your strategy with each turn.

Try to add tiles to maximize the income. Each tile will have unique effects and interactions with other tiles!

Farmers will make you HAPPY!

Freeze BUG! Try PC version if you could.

Potential fix:

"While everything is loading, zoom in and out just a little bit really fast. Then while the year is happening, also do that." -coffeecowgames

zoom in/out using middle mouse scroll.

update 8-18: added speed up when having too many tiles to save time, added watermark

What do you guys have in mind for the outerloop? let me know!

How to continue playing? Or is it over?

holy you r good! I have not designed an end game so it is over when u think it is!

(+1)

I can't pay the taxes, too realistic!

(+1)

I don't really get it, I don't understand how money making works exactly and I cant do anything against Pine?
I keep losing in Year 4/5 because I cant pay tax :(

(+1)

A fun game, but imbalanced. The crows are majorly outpaced by the pests, and there is no other way to control them.

(+1)

awsome game from what i can tell but had to stop playing cus it was so loud and i had so way to turn it down

very good

(+2)

Did well the first two rounds but I have to keep refreshing because the game keeps freezing, and now the taxes keep kicking my butt.

It is a fun little game, cute graphics, but the freezing issue is really frustrating, even when I try to do the scroll in/out method to help negate it. Hopefully the freeze bug gets fixed at some point.

(+3)

Agreed. Fun game but keeps freezing.

This account isn't yours is it? :/ Idk what's going on here but it doesn't seem good.

oh no...I will try reporting to itch. Thanks!

welcome! Just wanted to be sure, I'll do the same and report them as well! That's disgusting for someone to do. The game is awesome so far and I remember first playing your demo a few weeks back! I hope you keep up with it and I'm rooting for you!

you should be able to submit a DMCA claim as well

Love the game, would like to be able to buy “upgrades” quickly with shortcuts/hotkeys and hope in later versions years 10+ load and show up faster, the waits are looong

(+4)

Really beautiful graphics. It's a little unclear how to make money. Taxes make it frustrating to lose for reasons I don't understand.

(+3)

It's a really fun game, but it does have one balancing issue Imo, which is that the pest problem can get out of hand and it feels like the Crows and Scarecrows aren't enough to counteract it. Maybe add an item that can get ride of more pest tiles, but it's one of the more expensive items so that you can't just buy it already in the early game?

(+1)

thanks! Probably gonna work on it later!

(+3)

I've got the funniest fix for the freeze problem on the web version -- I'm on mac, firefox, and have gotten WELL past even year 13 an on by doing this.

While everything is loading, zoom in and out just a little bit really fast. Then while the year is happening, also do that.

I don't know why it's working, but I've been so sad the past couple of days since I kept having to refresh all the time with the freezing issue happening so randomly. Glad this silly little thing works on my end!!

Having the same issue as others with the tax resetting to 90g at year 10 and then randomly glitching into different numbers.

Still, thanks for this fun lil game!

(+1)

amazing observation! I have no idea why neither.

(+1)

Really fun and really charming! Takes a bit of luck. Good way to kill some time.

nice game.

difficult start, if unlucky.

after surviving the start, tho, it becomes a matter of spending all your money.

i guess the start is fine. maybe add more negative squares that take a while to become positive, so a player cant simply buy all and win.

buying everything in the shop should bankrupt the farm.

at some point at year 11 the tax lowered back to only 90. not sure if that is intended.

good luck.

(+1)

Really sad it freezes so quickly in the web version, I sadly don't have hardware to download the game.

Nevertheless, from what i've seen, this is a pretty cool concept!

(+4)

hey! on the mac edition your purchases don't stack and it takes up a lot of screen real estate and makes the game feel unplayable.

(-1)

sorry I dont have a mac currently! You can use scroll button to zoom.

i was zooming but theres unfortunately a limit to the zoom </3 All good though, aside from the visual stuff the game is quite fun

(+3)

Hey there! My name is Ichit. I've done some QA for games like The Sims and Gears of War!

I played the game for an hour and wrote up a small report with some feedback.

Feel free to reach out to me if you want further testing on this product or any other products!

Feedback:

- I think the art is quite solid and works really well for this game!

- At the beginning of the game. I feel like you either will lose or win. I lost like 5 times, then won big haha.

- I like the casualness of the game where you just need to buy the tiles and let the game work for you.

- I like the effect of the tiles updating and popping up, then getting the money!

- I am a bit confused if there is strategy involved. I feel like I am able to just continue as long as I buy tiles -- so far.

- I don't know why I need to be wary of certain tiles or things each turn after playing. (i.e. Pests, UFO's etc.)

- Didn't realize there was a reroll button till a bit later in the game.

- When you lose, it happens a bit too quickly to know what happened.

- When I first played the round. I thought I was going to be able to select where the tiles would be so I could strategize the placements to min / max the values.

- After I bought a bunch of tiles in the shop. I thought my game froze for 5 seconds, then it all popped up suddenly. Perhaps adding a slow loading of the tiles, or letting player know that the farm is generating with some UI might be good while it's generating

- At year 12. It took about a minute before the phases could run through. It seems like the longer you go, the longer it takes for a turn to resolve. I feel like the time to resolve things should be relatively about the same time. or upto a max amount of time.

- I had to end up restarting on year 14. it was taking too long to resolve my turn and also looks like I probably would have lasted forever.

My tax was at 193, and my income was 418. But I could stock up on money so earlier I had a couple of thousand in my pocket

Suggestions:

- I feel like adding a little mascot could be cute. Like a guy taking your money each turn and talking to you -- similar to mr monopoly haha.

- Could be neat if you could upgrade the shop. Being able to add more slots.

- Tile idea - fruit trees. After a year or so, it will bear fruit, and each season, the fruit's value increases by 1. -- The idea here is the player could make investments that might work in the future.

- Buy button also is still showing after purchasing the item and it got sold. Perhaps it can be disabled, or hidden if you bought something

- I feel like the OK button should be renamed to "continue" to give more context

- Initially I didn't know how much money I have. Till I found out it was income on the bottom.

--> I feel like "income" on the bottom right could probably just say "cash". I feel like players might inherently understand that a bit easier. Cash is something to be spent

- I feel like the tax value on the bottom right should be colored red, like you did in the setup / shop phase to emphasize the gate they need to pass

- In the ledger, could use the coin icons when mentioning money, and tax paid could be styled red, to indicate the money you lost.

- The zoom in / out could go a bit faster. It takes a while to zoom out.

- could be neat if player is able to sell existing tiles to avoid certain things or try to consolidate on a particular kind of tile or strategy

- I think it could be neat at the end of you show the ledger and say this is how much money and tax you paid year over year. To show more of a sense of growth.

- At a certain point after the years. I got a lot of money to spend, so I find myself buying all the possible tiles and rerolling. Hard to say how this should be handled, but just wanted to let you know I encountered it.

- Maybe player can invest in a tech tree, that will allow them to buy more types of tiles, albeit possibly more expensive ones.

Bugs:

- Go button cannot be clicked in the middle.

- On Web build:

--> Game broke on year 5 -- possibly after I hovered on dorm.

--> Game broke on year 5 -- after attempting to buy lumberyard.

- Note after I switched to PC build, the game was alot more stable. No freezes whatsoever. Although note the game takes a while to resolve as mentioned earlier.

- After you buy a tile, the money icon is still showing on the tile purchase button

- Maybe you can upgrade existing properties to spend extra cash.

--> i.e. Baby goes through an education. Makes farms more efficient and gives more value.

- I feel like when you breeze through the seasons, could be neat to have some effects with it.

Fall - shows a little wind.

Spring - petals flying

Summer - birds chirping

Winter - snowing

Perhaps they can be randomized as well, so it's not always showing.

Could also do effects, like cloudy, overcast, raining. And perhaps these effects might also effect your tiles. (could do a forecast section in the shop phase)

i.e. When it rains, each tile of wheat gives 1 gold.

- Some possible bugs. It says "The tax you owe is" "25" "in 0 turn." "Be aware of Pine, Pine"

--> Usually we would use this grammar. "Be aware of: <x> and <y."

--> 0 turn mention. Could probably just say "next turn"

--> The other is Pine is mentioned twice.

- When I died and was hovering over one of the tiles I bought, the popup got stuck to my cursor

- Not sure if intended, but after my fantastic baby grew up into a teenager on the board, the tile still shows as fantastic baby.

- Net income => Net Income (in the ledger)

- Some tiles have periods at the end of description. some don't.

i.e. look at fertilizer versus farmer.

- Pond has a grammar mistake, "One of Pests"

- When your farm gets big enough, you are unable to see description of tiles to purchase in the shop / planning phase when hovering over the options. it just shows me the description of my wheat tiles

- After getting enough tiles, if I hover on the top where my bought tiles were, the descriptions are incorrect. For example. sometimes when I hover on wheat, it shows title / description about milk.

- After reroll price gets past 100, the text gets close to the coin icon

- The positioning of the coin icon is inconsistent. (the messages, reroll, the tax and income mentions)

(+1)

thanks soo much!

(+1)

I think I was not supposed to reach this much money. But it was probably my 50th run. I usually end up losing before the 5th round. Very cool game!

(+1)

impressive!!! Any suggestions?

Well, it does become a bit frustrating that when the farm gets very big it takes A LOT of time to load everything. I have to wait more then I interact with the game, which would not be a problem if it could run in background (which it does not). But I still had lots of fun!

noted!

Nice game!

(+1)

those darned taxes >:(

(+4)

Also noticing an issue with pests/crows. When a Crow tree appears next to pest tiles, they do not turn into wheat as the description says. The pest tiles just disappear entirely, sometimes leaving the crow tree with no other tiles around so it cannot travel around. This leaves that lone little tile empty where no one can reach it at all and my board isn't really navigable for farmers and pests run wild.

(+1)

Yeah, unfortunately is freezing. Froze at year 5 and 8 for me.

Love the design! Would love to play more once the freezing gets fixed

Froze on year 8 while shopping.

(+1)

the game freezes often

(+2)

Has a freezing problem...
I am guessing this time it was cause a till was no longer touching farm after a effect.

(+1)

Just seems to freeze when ever...

(+1)(-2)

this is gambling. I don’t enjoy this game. I feel like I have no control and clicking the “go” button makes me feel like I have just been called an idiot :/ I don’t think I encountered any crash but given the limited controls this is not surprising.

You can buy more tiles to get more money, so there is some skill.

(+2)

No, sometimes the tiles I buy end up in places where they are useless and I lose in very few turns without being able to do anything.

Another small issue: Each turn, the camera will automatically zoom-in. This is a bit frustrating when I try to zoom-out again and again to see what should be needed and keep track over the general status of the farm

(+2)

Cool concept. But everything I buy will obscure the screen on higher levels and I will not be able to see anything.

how did you get that, that’s incredible!!

Unfortunately it is just RNG, I had lots of farmers, wheat and oaks and the lights spawned near farmers pretty often

awesome luck on that run!!

Update: Last update fixed this! Thank you devs!

(+2)

Few points:

  • Instead of having each card you buy displayed at the top and eventually covering the game i think it would give the same effect if you just place the card and a x2, x5, x6, xn next to it.
  • After a few tries you discover that buying houses, trees, babies and cows is not worth, since buying directly farmers is better.
  • Since it's RNG based if you don't get a farmer in the first 2 shops and you get pines you basically lost.

I think the game is overall entertaining and would like to see the direction this game takes!

I like this alot

(+1)

game is really fun, only issue is the fact that the game tends to crash after level 15ish aswell as the icons of the things youve bought popping up on screen blocking your farm. if you added more content and made it easier to zoom out and move the camera around, i could see this being a game that people could spread a lot of time of. good game overall!!!

(+1)

I liked the game, my highest was 18. But it eventually got boring, especially when you have to wait for it to finish preparing. I think this would be nice to have in the background. And when you ''lose'', it says 0 for total. And this happened a couple times but sometimes it says 0 on tax. Not sure if its supposed to do that, but yeah. I liked the game overall, it wasnt bad. It'd be nice if we had defitions though, like a description of what UFO does and etc.

(1 edit)

Thanks for playing this game over 18!!

What else do you think could make the game more engaging, besides adding more content?

Turn 8 was my best, a very cool game! And just as one coment said: My end screen also had income and tursn played as zero. Don't know why.

Excelente juego! Sólo que no me quedó muy claro qué debo hacer cuando aparecen los UFO, me quedé sin movimientos ni ingresos gracias a que secaron todo jaja, ¡Ayuda! :(((

(1 edit)

Cool game! Definitely like whats going on here, but just as a heads up the end screen (after failing) displayed both income and turns played as zero for me? I definitely did not do well but not that badly haha. This was on the web ver.

This is also very (very) difficult if the rng gods dislike you.

Kind of unbalanced at the start, would like it if you could drag tiles

(+1)

thanks! Dragging would become tiring if having too many tiles though. Still need to figure out what to do for RNG but too potentially infinite of tiles.

(+3)

Game crashes after 5 turns every time for me :(

Same here

(1 edit)

sorry webgl version is just too fragile. I open the links for pc. Thanks for playing!

(+1)

Killed by pine, looking forward to update lol
